Horn And Draw Bar Assembly for Full Length Pipe Expander
The expander head is held in position by means of a long, tubular support from the expander cylinder to allow a pipe length to slide over it. This tubular support is called a “horn”.
The horn serves as a reaction member to the drawbar pull necessary to pull the cones into the expanding dies. The drawbar is a tension member, which connects the power cylinder with the cone. The high forces created by the power cylinder are transmitted through the drawbar to the cone in the head. To collapse the expander dies, the power cylinder reverses direction, and the drawbar then becomes a compression member, the horn, a tension member.
#1 horn and draw bar assembly is used for pipes ranging in diameters from 16" (406.4mm) through 22" (558.8mm);
#2 horn and draw bar assembly is used for pipes ranging in diameters from 24" (609.6mm) through 64" (1626mm);
